The Al-Khwarizmi Math and Physics Club Al'Khwarizmi was an Islamic mathematician who wrote on Hindu-Arabic numerals and was among the first to use zero as a place holder in positional base notation. The word algorithm is derived from his name. His algebra treatise Hisab al-jabr w'al-muqabala gives us the word algebra and can be considered as the first book to be written on algebra. The Al-Khwarizmi Math and Physics Club was formed in the Fall of 2007 by Abdulla Zaid, a student from Yemen, who wanted to be able to meet with other students and talk about math and physics. He also wanted to foster a positive impression of the people of his native land by doing positive things while he was here. With his efforts last term Abdulla did just that. During that fall semester the group studied for and competed in the Student Mathematics League competition held by the American Mathematics Association for Two Year Colleges. The club also held a competition themselves for hand powered airplanes, judging both on distance and flight time. This competition was made open to the SMCC student body and prizes were given. In addition, during the fall semester, the club sponsored a physics lecture given by a visiting scientist, Dr Frank Chambers. As a result, the subject (The Quest for the Perfect Cup of Coffee) turned into an article in the Portland Press herald. http://pressherald.mainetoday.com/story.php?id=153208&ac=MaineLife . To finish the semester the club enjoyed a pizza party, watching math movies and playing ping pong.
