MAT 140 - Pre-Calculus Mathematics

This course is designed to add depth and breadth to a student’s mathematical background before embarking on a study of the methods of calculus. The course covers a review of algebra, linear, and quadratic functions; polynomial, rational, exponentional, radical, and logarithmic functions; compositions and inverses of functions; theory of polynomials with the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra; trigonometric functions and identities; additional topics and applications. Prerequisite: MAT-108 and MAT-130 or MAT-125 or equivalent

Course Objectives:  Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to

  1. Express complex problems in symbolic form and solve using equations, inequalities and absolute values.
  2. Use all manner of numbers effectively, including those expressed in scientific, exponential, logarithmic, and radical form as well as other bases.
  3. Use polynomial expressions to solve complex problems.
  4. Solve quadratic equations, including those with rational terms, by factoring, the Quadratic Formula, by Completing the Square, and matrices.
  5. Graph linear functions in Cartesian Coordinates using Point Slope, Two Point Form, Distance, Midpoint, Circles and Variations, and Piecewise Defined Functions.
  6. Solve systems of equations graphically, by algebra and by matrix and solve word problems using these ideas.
  7. Use quadratics and the algebra of functions to compute ratio, proportion and variation (direct and inverse), as well as exponential, logarithmic, composite and inverse functions.
  8. Use trigonometry, including right angle and arbitrary trigonometry, Heron's Formula and Polar Coordinates to solve word problems.
  9. Use matrices for solving problems, including Cramer's Rule, determinants and matrix inversion.
  10. Analyze arithmatic and geometric sequences and series effectively.
  11. Perform calculations related to permutations, combinations, and probability.
