Taking courses "at a distance" can open the doors of SMCC's math courses to
those who would not normally have access to the course offerings. For example,
geography, time constraints, or physical barriers might be standing in the way
of taking a campus based course. However, taking online courses is not for
the faint of heart. To help ensure you reach your goals please consider
the following:
Have you checked with an advisor? It is very important that you talk
with a knowledgeable advisor before you begin any course of study. You want to
be sure that what you do will actually be moving you towards your goal.
Do you have the self-discipline to work independently? The self-paced,
independent mode of delivery for these courses is a two-edged sword. It's
wonderful to have control of the pace and sequence of the lessons but it is also
very easy to fall into procrastination. Successful completion requires a
disciplined, consistent effort. Take this
self test to assess your
readiness to take online classes.
Have you enlisted the help of a facilitator?
If you live close enough to campus and have the time, we will ask you to come to
campus occasionally to take a test and/or to receive tutoring. If you are
to take your course totally at a distance, never coming to campus, you will have
to have a facilitator. Your facilitator is the person who will be responsible
for receiving, proctoring, and returning all exams. Facilitators must be
education officials at a university, community college or public school site,
other governmental or community officials or, if such persons are unavailable,
other persons approved in advance by the instructor. Relatives cannot be
facilitators. You should
submit the Facilitator's Form
prior to the first day of class
when ever possible.
